Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, for They Will Inherit the Earth

I’d like to tell you a story from last week about a local man here. I will call him, “Papa” because he has 8 children (one of whom is the severely malnourished baby I wrote about a few days ago who is still hanging on – praise God!).

“Papa” is poor. Very poor. He lives in a rural village, is father to 8 children and has little more than some land, a few animals and his little mud hut. He has glaucoma in his eyes, making him almost blind.

I have eluded to the poor rains this year several times , which have caused many like “Papa” to worry as the hot season approaches about how he will feed his family. Several weeks ago he asked us for money to buy food for his family. Having given to him many times in the past, we really wanted to pray for a miracle for him, rather than buying one more sack of rice.

His miracle happened. We got a call two days ago that with no explanation his field had produced an abundant harvest of sorghum, whereas all the fields around him produced hardly anything. We had prayed last week that his field would be lush and green while the others around him were dry. It happened! At the same time, he got news that a distant relative was sending them 100 kilos of corn. Amazing. God provided. “Papa” thinks he’s poor. But God redefines poor….he says they are blessed.
